NKT Modernizes Enterprise Data Migration with Datadobi
Founded in 1891 during the Second Industrial Revolution, NKT pioneered the cable industry in the Nordics. Today, it helps power the Fourth Industrial Revolution through its expertise in energy transmission and advanced manufacturing, delivering cable solutions that support critical energy infrastructure worldwide.
Challenge
As part of an important storage modernization initiative, NKT needed to migrate data from a legacy storage architecture into a new storage environment in its Cologne data center. This comprised approximately 226 TB of data (including 102 million files), such as large volumes of business-critical engineering information, from CAD drawings to GES assessments.
The nature of the migration, which included unstructured and raw data, meant NKT needed a reliable way to move assets accurately while minimizing business disruption. For document owners and compliance stakeholders, the company also wanted to create clear audit trails and chain-of-custody reporting to demonstrate exactly what happened during the migration.
We needed to have full confidence in the process and relevant technologies before the cutover. This made the choice of partner and technology solution absolutely critical to the project as a whole.

Solution
Following a recommendation from their partner, NKT selected Datadobi’s unstructured data management platform, StorageMAP, as its migration solution. StorageMAP is designed to help organizations move unstructured file and object data between storage platforms with speed and precision.
The project was managed by the partner’s implementation team, with support from Datadobi, and required very little manual effort from NKT’s infrastructure team. The process also included a dry run so NKT could estimate how long the migration would take before moving into production.
Datadobi’s documentation and reporting enabled NKT to monitor the migration in progress and verify the final result. The reporting also provided the chain-of-custody information required by the business.
Results
The migration was completed successfully and delivered the outcome NKT had been aiming for, with the team describing the migration as “seamless.”
Looking ahead, NKT views Datadobi as a strong candidate for future migration projects across its larger sites and edge locations. The company is also exploring the use of StorageMAP to analyze hot and cold data as it develops future data retention policies.
“We’ve been very happy with the Datadobi product and the overall customer-partner experience. We have achieved exactly what we set out to do, and we’d certainly consider using this technology again for future migration projects.
Peter Knosel, Senior System Engineer at NKT
