Technology and the Impact of Coronavirus

As I write to you from my basement in the second month of a global pandemic, I definitely have spent a lot of time thinking about the things that I am most thankful for – my family, my friends, and my co-workers to name a few. As a society, I am sure there are going to be many changes in our everyday lives that we will face as the world starts to come out of quarantine.

From a technology standpoint, I find this to be a fascinating time. For the last 10 years, I have worked as a pre-sales engineer for several different storage companies. During that time, I’ve mostly worked from my home office, except when I was out visiting customers, which I am really missing. A lot of my friends would express their jealousy towards my “work from home” lifestyle. Many of those friends now get to experience that “work from home” life – if they’re lucky enough to still be employed.

In the last few months, we have seen the will of humankind implement tremendous innovation to keep the lights on and the business running. We rely on social media now more than ever to communicate with friends, family, and colleagues. I’m sure we’re going to find an astronomical increase in unstructured data during this pandemic. All the things we’ve taken for granted from a business perspective, like meeting by Webex and Zoom, are now part of everyone’s daily life. From our children learning with Webex and Zoom calls to decades-old college roommates, to Facebook live feeds of our favorite musicians: content, content, content. To be honest with you, I’ve been surprised at how well technology has accommodated the immense increase in users and activity across the world.

Datasets are going to continue to grow at colossal rates; there’s no getting around this. Hardware refreshes aren’t going anywhere, and object storage solutions are far from the point of replacing traditional filesystem technologies. At Datadobi, my colleagues and I have remained 100% operational throughout the entire lockdown and things have been very busy. As we venture into this state of “new normal,” we’re still here for you, providing you with the ability to ensure your unstructured data is managed in the fastest and most secure way. Regardless of whether you have multiprotocol data, WORM data, mangled character encoding, NFSv4, POSIX ACLs, or whatever the case, Datadobi is more than equipped to accommodate your data management needs. With the enhancements recently made to our reporting capabilities, we now can provide our customers with a chain of custody report to guarantee the integrity of your data – a very powerful feature to have.

As I sign off here, I hope everyone is doing well. As the world starts to look towards moving back to “normal,” so will our responsibilities at work. We love talking to our customers and helping them solve their data management challenges. If there’s anything we can do to help, please contact us with any questions and above all, stay safe!
