One of the most common conversations we have with customers is around S3 object data and our capabilities of migrating that data between disparate source and target systems. Customers and partners alike often ask how they can move data to and from different cloud offerings, as well as between cloud providers.
After the initial global push to the hosted cloud services – over 10 years ago – many find themselves locked into a cycle of cost spending they never expected or find the complexities of architecting a cost-efficient solution to be as burdensome as the problem itself. There are many reasons for a decision to move S3 data from one ecosystem to another including performance, security, management, control, functionality, and cost. Although the motivations are varied the solutions are not, often requiring complex decisions and painful sacrifices.
So why move data from one object ecosystem to another? Customers have continuously found that egress charges of data on an S3 object cloud become exponentially cost prohibitive as users or applications running on-prem need to access that data. For some customers, latency or access time of the data living in a particular region or access zone may not be fast enough to achieve or meet the SLA in place. The good news is that Datadobi’s object-to-object migration software allows customers to control the destiny of their data and its associated access cost and performance.
On the flip side, customers may need to embrace a move from on-prem architecture to a hybrid model where heavy analytics loads can be spun up and down on demand. In cases like this, a cloud-hosted solution may be best suited where spinning up and down heavy analytics workloads is not an issue.
How can Datadobi help accomplish a fast and verified S3 object migration to any ecosystem? The answer is based on our existing, highly reliable, enterprise-proven architecture, which scales out and can be controlled through one single pane of glass. When moving S3 datasets, we rely on a sophisticated chain of custody that can be provided to any auditing body, proving that the data on the destination is exactly is as it was on the source.
I will add that our ability to throttle the network bandwidth and to tune the amount of copy and scan threads in use is an invaluable feature and true differentiator when it comes to object-to-object migrations. Datadobi’s unstructured data migration software, DobiMigrate®, includes support for AWS®, Dell EMC® ECS®, NetApp® StorageGRID®, Cloudian® HyperStore®, and all other leading S3 object stores.
