Difficult Multiprotocol Migrations are a Thing of the Past.

DobiMigrate offers the most complete solution to multiprotocol migrations on the market today. DobiMigrate simplifies these complex and difficult migrations by automating many of the risky manual tasks required by other tools.

A file stored on NAS can have different security styles: NTFS security (Windows ACLs), UNIX security (mode bits or Unix ACLs) or both – depending on the platform configuration. A file that has both security settings is referred to as a multiprotocol file (note that this is not to be confused with the way a file is accessed which can also be through SMB, NFS or both).

In very simple terms (for very complex functionality) DobiMigrate migrates multiprotocol data by first copying the content and metadata – which include the security settings – using one protocol. Immediately thereafter, DobiMigrate will copy the metadata using the other protocol.

When a client connects to the NAS, the system will check the access rights to a file based upon the protocol used, the security style of the file, and the platform configuration. The platform may need to look up a user mapping and/or generate a temporary set of access rights from the original security settings of the file in order to check the user’s request.

Although DobiMigrate can copy both the NTFS and UNIX security settings of a file, this does not imply that the behavior with respect to file access rights is the same between different NAS platforms. As there is no industry standard regarding multiprotocol access rights, every platform has its own implementation of the security model.
